Animating Science: Visualizing Content

Animating Science: Visualizing Content

In accordance with this year’s theme, i.e. Science, three graduate students of the HKU organized this Symposium for KLIK!, discussing the combination of Science and Animation. Seven speakers, including astrophysicists, philosophers and animators, will cover the various ways in which these two different fields either collaborate or clash.

During this Symposium actual science will happen! Have you always dreamed of being a guinea pig? This is your change to watch animation, all in the name of scientific advancement during an experiment by Dr. Valentijn Visch. Philosopher Bas Haring and animator Johan Klungel will discuss the reasons for using animation in visualizing complex issues for the series ‘Wisebits’, which was broadcasted by the RVU. The animation studio linked to ICMS (the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems) will cover the problems they encounter while visualizing data that in fact aren’t visible. Harry Kloor will give a presentation concerning the film Quantum Quest, which was initiated at JPL/NASA.

Do you have an opinion on the combination of Science and Animation and you’re not afraid to share your thoughts? In the closing debate you can join the other speakers in a discussion on the friction between design and content.

This program screened as part of KLIK! Amsterdam Animation Festival 2010
