The Young Punx: All These Things Are Gone

The Young Punx: All These Things Are Gone

  • Han Hoogerbrugge
  • The Netherlands, 2014
  • 13 min.

'All These Things Are Gone' is the title track and spiritual centerpiece of The Young Punx 3rd album. An epic 14 minute long journey, it constantly evolves and takes in many musical styles, inspired by the 90s bliss house of artists like Saint Etienne and The Beloved. The track is a melancholic but moving ode to all that is accidentally lost from the world in the name of progress. When you are a child you think everything will last for ever. But as you grow up you realize quite the opposite is true. The large and small. The important and the trivial. The public and the personal. Everything you love, everything you hate. In time, they will all be gone.
The track is accompanied by a masterful video by esteemed Dutch multimedia artist Han Hoogerbrugge, who has collaborated with The Young Punx across all 3 of their albums. Han's characteristic deadpan hand-drawn style perfectly matches the track, creating an uneasy world where the familiar takes on a surreal edge like a nightmare of half remembered images. Both the video and the song leave you with the aftertaste that although everything in the world will end, nothing touches you deeper than the loss of a loved one.

Towing Path

Towing Path

  • Michiel van Bakel
  • The Netherlands, 2014
  • 5 min.

Towing path / Jaagpad experimental short HD-video, 5 min30 sec, Colour/B&W, Stereo

'Listening to a passing train a historical fact pops into my mind; Where the train speeds across the bridge right now, 300 years ago the intercity connection was a horse-drawn boat.' Michiel van Bakel tells about a moment of inspiration for his short film.
Van Bakel decides to walk along the towpath (in Dutch called jaagpad, named after the jager (chaser) which accompanied the horse). Armed with an antique pinhole camera obscura he photographs the water, the plants and passing boats. The camera is a converted flatbed scanner, that scans its surroundings with a long shutter speed. It is an unconventional device that reveals a hidden landscape through unpredictably distorted black and white images. He animates the still images that possess a surreal quality into a film. The film evolves towards a certain abstraction symbolising the changing experience of reality. Van Bakel wants to examine effects of technology on the human experience, particularly where the physical and virtual meet, and the industrial and organic unite.

Jaagpad
