Under the Expanding Animation heading, HAFF hosts an exhuberant exhibition with artwork and films from animation artists from Utrecht and six extraordinary animation installations; every one of them amazing combinations of animation, film and fine arts. These ingenious applications of animation involve new narrative practices and new ways of experiencing moving images.
From the Louis Hartlooper Complex festival hub (LHC, Tolsteegbrug), Expanding Animation makes up a ribbon through the city of Utrecht, via the Centraal Museum (the Tuinzaal behind the Nicolai Church), Oude Hortus and University Museum (entrance via the University Museum, Lange Nieuwstraat), to the exhibition in City Hall (Korte Minrebroederstraat) and the new Council Offices (Stadsplateau). Centraal Museum and Oude Hortus/Universiteitsmuseum are open from 11:00 to 17:00. The exhibition at City Hall and installation at Stadsplateau are open from 8:30-17:00 and can be visited for a longer period.

An Introduction to the Animation:
In 2013, we collected number of black-and-white photos from Chinese flea markets and imagined that all of them belonged to one fictional Chinese person.
Through rendering, collage, and a cyclical process of hand coloring, scanning, and printing, we created connections among the photos.
We spent two years repeating this process. These 1168 hand-colored photos invoke the passage of time, injecting life into the imaginary protagonist as he ventures through time and space.
