On the cutting face of visual art and animation, artists are active creating installations. The combination of the possibilities of animation film and three-dimensional art or theatre yields a unique imagery and a presentation all its own. Get acquainted with ingenious applications of animation as an art form that fires the imagination and a technique that makes anything possible.
Cycling Utrecht (Places and Monuments 7) by Pierre Hébert will be screened through 5 July in the City Hall (Stadsplateau) on the occasion of the start of the Tour the France in Utrecht from 1-5 July.

The project saVer begins with short animations which show objects gradually disappearing (a shoe, a computer, a chair, a refrigerator, an animal skull...). To make the animated sequences, objects are cutted or sanded stepwise and each of these are registered by photographyes (60 to 900 frames depending on the object).
Now a days it consists on 10 animations, presented in an exhibition which integrates different types of complementary representations: videos, installations, silkscreen printings and sculptures.
In the interactive and participative installations, image display is activated by the viewer through basic properties of the body ( to blow, to shout or to walk), innate movements give way to manufactured movement.

High up on a ceiling the insect come to the cinema to watch a film. The movie that is playing is Paul Bush's 'While Darwin Sleeps'. Humans can see the cinema upside but they cannot enter however hard they try.

The installation: the cinema, video projector, cctv camera and cables and power supply will be sent. A movie file to be played in the cinema will also be sent. Monitor and computer needs to be provided by HAFF

A video installation by Theodore Ushev, presented by the National Film Board of Canada.
PALIMPSEST: Noun (from the Greek palimpsestos, meaning “scraped again”). A very old document in which the original writing has been erased and replaced with new writing; writing material (such as a parchment or tablet) used one or more times after previous writing has been erased.
Originally, three books: a practical guide, a reference work, a collection of seminal tales in Western culture. More simply described: a film festival catalogue, a dictionary, the Bible. Three works whose physical form has been made obsolete by the ephemeral nature of the digital world.
In a liberating gesture—is it a sacrilegious waste or a bold salvaging initiative?—artist and filmmaker Theodore Ushev covers the pages of these works with paint, concealing words and blurring symbols to create three films that, though based on this material, generate new meanings, rhythms, energy...
We are now in the heart of an act of creation through destruction, at the centre of a powerful artistic venting composed of three abstract animations that spill onto as many screens, thrown into relief and given structure by Ana Sokolovic’s original score. Between these three books, ceremoniously displayed, and a heap of smeared pages deposited in the centre of the room, there is the artist’s action. There is also the technical apparatus of the cinema, which breathes life into the material.
A commentary on the fragility of culture, Third Page from the Sun reimagines the concept of a palimpsest.
