The Berlin-based Pictoplasma project concentrates on contemporary character design. As market-friendly branding or its subversive inversion, loveable kitsch or urban art – contemporary character design, abstract and reduced to the essentials, has redefined aesthetic standards of visual communication worldwide. By playfully sampling and remixing visual codes, these characters evade established pictorial norms, confronting the viewer head on, emotionally and regardless of cultural background. The Pictoplasma project began in 1999 as the world’s first extensive inventory, collection and showcase of contemporary character design, whether it be animation, illustration, graphic art or toys. Since then, the project has published a series of highly regarded compilations, including The Character Encyclopaedia and Characters in Motion, that have gone on to become pictorial bibles of character design. The project also hosts annual conferences, festivals and exhibitions since 2004, joining artists around the world to talk about characters in commercial and gallery art. The screenings curated for the HAFF showcase highlights and fresh examples of a new generation of characters, bringing the style back into the world of animation.
