Since Vladimir Putin’s rise to power in 2000, Russia has come under tighter and tighter censorship. The internet, however, has so far escaped such tight control, enabling online forums, and with them animation produced for the internet, to become what the kitchens of their flats were for former Soviet dissidents: relatively free spaces for discussion and the exchange of ideas.

Timo Linsenmaier’s presentation focuses on this new brand of online animation commenting on political and social realities, works virulently distributed to their audiences via the web. Using examples that have gained infamy on the Russian-speaking web (on sites such as Masyana, Tushite Svet, and Rasta-Pauk), this talk presents a representative cross-section.

Timo Linsenmaier Linsenmaier is writing his PhD on the aesthetics of Soviet animation. He studied Media Theory at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design with Boris Groys and Animation History at VGIK Film School in Moscow with Stanislav Sokolov. He now lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.
