Expo Martha Colburn: Stop, Action, Vision

Stop, Action, Vision - Exhibtion featuring the work of filmmaker and visual artist Martha Colburn
On view until 13 April 2025
Location: Dat Bolwerck, Zaadmarkt 112, Zutphen

In close collaboration with Luxor Theatre Zutphen and Eye Filmmuseum Amsterdam, Dat Bolwerck is showcasing the kaleidoscopic work of filmmaker and visual artist Martha Colburn (USA, 1971) until 13 April 2025. This extensive presentation includes iconic films as well as a remarkable new video work. In addition, a lesser-known yet equally significant aspect of her artistry is highlighted: a large selection of unique, new, and previously unexhibited textile works, offering a closer look at the craftsmanship behind her artistic practice.

Additionally, the presentation includes several collages from the De Bruin-Heijn collection and artwork from the Eye Filmmuseum Amsterdam collection, giving us an insight into the origins and creative process behind Colburn's stop-motion videos. The exhibition also highlights her deep appreciation for contemporary musci, her musical collaborations, and the intricate connection between video and sound

About Martha Colburn's latest textile works
Layer by layer, thought by thought, Martha Colburn's new paintings have taken shape over a long time. These works incorporate unsettling news headlines from recent years, fragments from Colburn's personal life, and playful interpretations of iconic imagery. A skull, a tank. A teddy bear, a ballerina in a balaclava. Jagged female genitalia become a powerful symbol, sewn into the American flag. These are images that are universally recognisable - both timely and timeless.

Video works
In addition to showcasing some of Colburn's iconic videos, such as Dolls versus Dictators (2011), Triumph of the Wild (2009), and Day of the Dutch (2015), the exhibition also features an entirely new immersive video work, displayed in the medieval cellar of Dat Bolwerck.
