On 17 April, renowned Japanese composer and soundtrack producer Kensuke Ushio, known for his internationally acclaimed scores for anime series Chainsaw Man and Devilmen Crybaby, returns to Amsterdam's Melkweg for an enchanting gig featuring his by-now universally beloved intense, glitchy beats. This live set presents Kaboom with the perfect excuse to celebrate Ushio's career so far, and therefore we've asked the man himself to choosef his favourite anime film: Adolescence of Utena (1999). Ushio will briefly introduce the film via video message.

In this follow-up to the television series Revolutionary Girl Utena (1997), we follow teen girl Utena Tenjou, who disguises herself as a boy to enter the Ohtori Academy. Now a classic anime film, Adolescence of Utena has been hailed for its candid treatment of topics often controversial in Japan at the time like gender, sexuality and the educational system.
