Following his mother’s sudden death, nine-year-old Courgette is befriended by a police officer called Raymond. Courgette’s actual name is Icare, but he is very fond of the nickname his mother gave him. Raymond takes him to a foster home with other children his age who can’t live with their parents anymore. Courgette struggles to find his place, while the other children have trouble getting used to him. After the arrival of a new girl, Camille, he starts feeling at home. Thanks to Raymond and his new-found friends in the home, Courgette finds love and a new family.
Equally entertaining and heart-rending film with apt puppet animation is a unique tribute to neglected and mistreated children who do the best they can to survive.
