75 minutesStarter, main course and dessert all in one: Kaboom's International Short Film Competition.
Remember that time when cinema was not a thing yet? When animation only existed within faraway dreams? Dreadful. And then Kaboom came along. Dreams became reality, and animation was king of kings. Okay okay, perhaps our story is missing a few beats, but here’s the gist: after more than a century of cinema, it all comes down to this: a showdown between animators from all over the world, dubbed the Kaboom International Short Film Competition. Whoever comes out on top, know that the one true winner is already known: the art of animation.

Bon Appetite
Film Synopsis: In intimate relationships, some individuals perceive their partner as an extension of themselves, believing "you are me, and I am you." Under the influence of hormones, the idea of merging with the other person dominates their mind, as if consuming the other could maintain a symbiotic state. Using surrealist techniques, this film explores pathological symbiosis in intimate relationships, with the sheep and the flower serving as metaphors for male and female. It narrates the process of an intimate relationship from acquaintance to termination to rebirth.

The Painting
A short film made using pinscreen animation, The Painting explores the 1652 portrait of Queen Mariana of Austria by Velázquez. Michèle Lemieux demonstrates incredible mastery of the pinscreen, playing with shadow and light to evoke the tragic fate of Mariana, who was married to her uncle at the age of 14. Both painful and tender, this experimental work is a poem of a film: a meditation on the brutality of institutionalized incest and art’s power to capture the soul.
