The Filmbank

Freedom of visual expression is crucial for a thriving film scene. Experimental films analyse and criticise the mainstream film industry. Sometimes they have to take a step back in order to preserve the nature of the medium followed by a giant leap forwards to sample new possibilities.

The Filmbank in Amsterdam has been founded in 2001 for the promotion and distribution of independent, experimental Dutch films. ‘Experimental’ in the widest sense of the word, encapsulating work that is inspired by the classic avant-garde or work that explores the relationship between film and other art forms. Any form that is suitable for projection is eligible. Format and length are unimportant. Quality is. The Filmbank will showcase films that are unique in their unconventional subject matter, working method and form.

The programme at the Holland Animation Film Festival is a selection of recent accessions of The Filmbank. From fragmented and flowing time and the impact of contemporary popular visual culture until Fourier transformations and male pinups.

Straight monochrome image is transformed into a dramatic, silent spectacle where the colour subtly melts and solidifies lines and transfusing conical shapes. Colours eventually lose intensity, leaving only the basic structure, the "skeleton" picture. For this computer abstract film, Vegter used Fourier transformation.
