The Netherlands Film Fund appointed Willem Thijssen first animation intendant. From 1st September 2009, filmmakers can submit their ideas for (especially full-length) animation films to Thijssen. He annually commands 200,000 Euro for scenario, storyboard and project development. He will actively devote himself to the development of a full-length animation feature film and a series of super-short animation films. He also acts as a matchmaker between national and international parties. He can advise the commission on realisation requests. Staring from the ambition to strengthen and professionalise the Dutch animation film, the Fund increased the annual budget in the Animation category from 600,000 to one million Euro. Willem Thijssen produced more than eighty films, including many co-productions. As an animation producer, with his company CinéTé Filmproduktie, he has been active in Belgium and the Netherlands for over thirty years. He also wrote and directed his own films. He won an Oscar for Een Griekse Tragedie (1987, Nicole van Goethem) and for Father and Daughter (2001, Michael Dudok de Wit). For Thijssen, his appointment marks the close of a four-year stint as a commission member for the Animation category. For the duration of his appointment, his company will not submit any requests to the Fund. His appointment will last for two years.
During the HAFF, Willem Thijssen will unfold his plans as an intendant, on Saturday 16:30 in the Janskerk at the Janskerkhof. In addition, he will compile a programme of films that he considers shining examples of the art of animation and that provide an interesting context for his plans.
