Xun Sun (China)

Xun Sun (1980, China) attended the Hangzhou art academy and in 2006 established his own animation studio Pi in this city. Within a short time, he produced an impressive series of titles. He paints and makes animated films and installations. His work is exhibited in modern art galleries and at film festivals. Recent solo expositions were Mythos in ShanghART gallery in Shanghai (2007) and Coal Spell in the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles (2008).

Xun Sun freely utilizes the possibilities of visual art and animation, which yields a wholly unique visual language and often a very particular presentation. He is fascinated with history, or rather with the handing down of history and myths. Not just the history of his native country, the contours of which regularly shine through in his films, but also the history of the world. The symbolism in his work, the idiosyncratic elements and the use of light and sound are at once disquieting and playful, but amazingly fit the proposition in Heroes No Longer, ‘When history becomes history, the important issue is being good at studying.’
