Shorts 1: What We Tell Ourselves
70 min. | Dialogue Language: English
Once upon a time ... Films from all over the world came together on a glorious battlefield. Victory would be for one of them. But there would be no losers, because talent and art are there to be celebrated, to be loved, to be remembered and to be devoured by you ... the audience. The battle would forever be known as Kaboom's International Short Film Competition. And we are honoured to organise that competition year in year out. In 2023, a large number of short films battle it out for our coveted awards!
It's Nice in Here
A timely and deeply emotional story, Robert-Jonathan Koeyer's It's Nice in Here is a fragmented portrait of a moment, a person, and a place, seen through the subjective memories of a young girl (Imani) and a rookie police officer (David), who both have wildly different recollections of the same fateful moment involving a black boy in a red hoodie in a corner store. Hang in tight for this heart-breaking tale of police violence and racial injustice. The film premiered at the 61st Semaine de la Critique in Cannes and was nominated for the Golden Calf for Best Short Film in 2022.
Persona
persona (noun) - the particular type of character that a person seems to have and that is often different from their real or private character
In her graduation short film, animator Moon Su-jin depicts the nightmarish process of being encroached on by the persona. Just how big is the gap between 'me' and 'my persona'? Persona was the first Korean animated short to compete for the Palme d'Or for Best Short Film at the Cannes Film Festival.
Aldo
We all know them, those hot summer afternoons, lying on the couch ... If only those damn mosquitos would stay away! Aldo shows the clash between a man and a mosquito, and the guilt after the battle is fought.
The Record
An antique music instrument dealer receives a magical vinyl record from a traveller that "reads your mind and plays lost memories". Obsessed by this endless record, the antique dealer listens to it again and again, and the memories reemerge until one last and most painful memory is revealed: his separation from his mother on the Swiss border during WWII. The Record - the debut film by Jonathan Laskar - is a story about our duty and need to remember, with a vinyl record as the ultimate archival symbol.
No Lullaby
The colours. The music. The wild imagination!! In this crazily creative music video for a song by Argentinian electropop band Siamés, a girl tries to go back home with her little brother while protecting him from his live fantasies.
Zoon
Small shimmering axolotls are in heat, nuzzling and nibbling one another's limbs. Soon a much larger, two-legged forest-dweller encounters the lustful group. A cheerful snack party begins. Fusing different techniques into hybrid forms, this short is a visual treat open to interpretation.
Shall We Talk?
Coming out and talking about your sexuality to your parents ... Is it ever easy? This cutely put together queer short film documents the story of Polina, a bisexual Russian girl.
Sunset Singers
The retired Hong Kong couple, Long and Sophie, are amateur singers. While Sophie arrives early at her performance and gets herself prepared, Long is caught up in the subway by an unexpected circumstance. Employing both animation and archival live-footage shot during the Anti-Extradition Protests in Hong Kong in 2019, Sunset Singers presents a fictional yet profound commentary on the parallel lives of Hong Kong's individuals.
The Invention of Less
These are frustrating times with enormous global challenges, yet motivational and optimistic stories can help us move forward. Here, a young polar bear has to leave her her home and move to Zurich. She tries to make a living until she suddenly has an idea that will change the world for ever. This insightful and delightful film shows that we can all be the change that is needed.
Au Cas où le Corps Exulte
An impressive student work about the exploitation in the porn industry and the role of the camera as a voyeuristic accomplice, Au cas où le corps exulte lets us in on the lives of a young camera operator and his friend who is an actress. Shooting a rape scene with his friend taking part, the camera man (un)willingly becomes more of an actor of this rotten system than a mere witness.
FMK
Love is messy! "I wanna fight, marry, kiss you all in one day." Yep, relatable. This bright and colourful dark comedy is a music video for a song by American singer-songwriter GAYLE (featuring blackbear) and sees miniature Gayle and blackbear failing at being good neighbours. Think Celebrity Deathmatch meets Groundhog Day in the style of A Town Called Panic ... A play stop-motion tale of human behaviour gone wrong.
