Shorts 2: Through Our and Other Eyes
70 min. | Dialogue Language: English
Once upon a time ... Films from all over the world came together on a glorious battlefield. Victory would be for one of them. But there would be no losers, because talent and art are there to be celebrated, to be loved, to be remembered and to be devoured by you ... the audience. The battle would forever be known as Kaboom's International Short Film Competition. And we are honoured to organise that competition year in year out. In 2023, a large number of short films battle it out for our coveted awards!
Home of the Heart
They say "home is where the heart is", but what if one doesn't know where exactly their heart is? Omid is an Iranian immigrant in Paris. One evening, in the street, he is attacked and stabbed in the heart. But Omid gets back up! At the hospital, the diagnosis is formal: he has no heart ... Has he left it behind in Iran? A personal story to its director, the film is a humorous yet poignant take on the immigrant experience.
Hairy Situations
Surely a visit to the hairdresser can't be that exciting? Except, in the hands of animator Dal Park it is! With an aesthetic to die for, this playful little short features a hairdresser trying to keep up with her demanding clients.
Funeral at Nine
We all deal with grief differently, don't we? Depending on who we are, we conceptualise death in a different way. In this magical visual poem, we find ourselves in a small town where a funeral is held after the death of a gardener. Three brothers are caught up in their imaginations on the day of the burial.
Yet Again
An animated music video in which the abstract and the figurative interact. An example of strata-cut animation in stop-motion, this short is bound to make you want to play with clay as well!
Skinned
"The pleasure of love lasts but a moment."
Encounter the right amount of creepy and disturbing with this tale of two swamp women, Siamese twins by one leg. At night the Flayed has terrifying nightmares in which she sees her sister's flesh covering her own body. With echoes of Cronenberg and Julia Ducournau, Skinned is a powerful stop-motion film about an abusive relationship that deeply affects the boundaries between the other and the self.
A Story for 2 Trumpets
The beauty of watercolour animation is on full display in this wonderfully metaphorical short by Amandine Meyer, which serves as a follow-up of a graphic novel of hers. In a pastel-coloured frenzy, the filmmaker traces the development from being an infant to an adult woman and artist. Whether about femininity, motherhood or the gift of being an artist, this stream of consciousness is sure to tap into every emotion.
RIM
Like zapping on a television from another planet. That's a bit how Hagar Faibish's debut film feels like - and that's a compliment. The director outlandish style gives way to a dystopian tale about a character losing touch with his other world by diffusing bit by bit with the virtual world of television. Embracing the nonsensical with a distinct melancholic tone, Faibish's surreal film is a demand for self-reflection in our modern world.
Above the Clouds
Love is as beautiful as it is scary. Balancing between reality and imagination, this work by Hungarian animator Vivien Hárshegyi shows a girl falling in love again. Caught in a whirlpool of old memories, she runs away and relives the highs and lows of her first relationship. Will she be able to free her soul to face the future with an open heart?
Goodbye Jérôme!
Reminiscent of the whimsical Beatles-inspired Yellow Submarine and filled with bizarre, unorthodox characters, Goodbye Jérôme traces a trip through paradise. Jérôme sets out to find his wife Maryline. In the course of his search, he sinks into a surreal and colourful world in which no one seems to able to help him.
